In the second edition of the KNOW title contest this prestigious title was awarded to the Consortium of Wrocław Center for Biotechnology. The consortium consists of 8 entities including three faculties of the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław, two faculties of the University of Wrocław, one faculty of the University of Technology in Wrocław and two others. The KNOW title was awarded in the field of agricultural sciences.

An international circle of experts appointed four National Scientific Leadership Centers: two in the field biological sciences, one in the field of Earth sciences and one in the field of agricultural sciences. The last one was awarded to the Wrocław Center for Biotechnology which consists of: the Faculty of Biotechnology and the Department of Chemistry from the University of Wrocław; the Department of Chemistry from Wrocław University of Technology; the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy from the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wrocław; the Faculty of Biology and Animal Science, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Food Science from Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences; the Centre for Research and Development from the Provincial Specialist Hospital in Wrocław.
The center specializes in the research on biotechnology, functional food, innovative technologies as well as the research on natural bio-substances in prevention and treatment of civilization diseases, red biotechnology (medical) and yellow biotechnology (nutrition and feeds). One of the successful projects carried out so far was to design a technology for acquiring new bio-substances from eggs, which are used for cancer treatment, neurodegenerative diseases and treatment of hypertension. This world-class achievement has resulted in establishment of cooperation with universities in Tel Aviv, Edmonton, Hannover, Leipzig, Prague, Bologna and INRA research center in France.
